SCHINDLER VISITOR CENTER

Space Installation

As more and more people inhabit cities, urban mobility gains even greater importance. Schindler elevators and escalators alone move a billion people a week. This is highlighted in the new Visitor Center in Ebikon, Switzerland, which was designed and implemented under the overall responsibility of iart over the course of five years. Tamschick Media + Space co-developed and produced three enormous immersive installations for the new building, all connected by a narrative bond.

I had the opportunity to art direct the motion design parts of the CITYSCAPE and CIRCLE installations for the better part of 2019.

It was a super rewarding experience, since my range of responsibilities in this overarching gig included the concept, design and animation of the general design language, presentations, motion design team lead as well as the supervision of implementation during installation phase.

Above all it was great to work with so many talented and super nice people not only at TMS and iArt but all other project partners and on the client side as well. Hardly ever before have I experienced such a respectful, productive and target-oriented collaboration of so many creative departments as in this project. Thanks everybody!

SURROUNDED BY PICTURES

THE CIRCLE

This unique cinematic installation is a free-floating ring measuring a diameter of five meters. The inner surface of which is equipped with high-res, curved OLED screens.

As soon as a group of visitors enters the CIRCLE, the ring is lowered from the ceiling and the film starts. The visitors immerse themselves in the 360° experience and come to know about the Schindler production and distribution cycles as a gigantic media panorama.

With respect to the viewing angle of the human eye, the 360° content is separated into 4 parts.

background loop/idlemode

In accordance with the existing design language of the Schindler group the basic look of the circle reflects the constant vertical motion of Schindler elevators

TECHNICAL DETAILS

  • Immersive 360° panorama
  • Ring of 24 curved OLED screens
  • ring diameter 5.2m, mechanically lowerable from the ceiling
  • resolution : 25,920 x 1,920 px
  • Production of 3 films of length: 1:30 min., 3:30 min. and 3:00 min.

CITY OF SCREENS

THE CITYSCAPE

The CITYSCAPE kinetic space installation consists of a group of soaring towers, on the facades of which LCD screens move physically up and down in a complex choreography.

Printed elements are combined with moving screens, resulting in a dynamic three-dimensional mosaic.

The screens reveal different perspectives on urban mobility. Moving walkways, escalators and lifts transport the residents of the futuristic CITYSCAPE.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

  • 30 towers of different heights with vertically moving LCD screens
  • 4 thematic zones
  • 29 moving screens 1,920 x 1,080px, 26 static screens 1,920 x 1,080px
  • In each tower print panels, LED panels and screens are combined
  • Total length of the production: 10min.

WORKFLOW

Because of the ever-changing light situations in the glass-covered building the idle mode of the circle was enhanced and inspired by reflections, the spectrum of light, iridiscence, positivity, transparency, transmission of information.

I developed a “construction kit” for the real-time programming in Unity
